Imagine working at a place where your every demand — no matter how extravagant, how outlandish — would be met with approval. Well, folks, welcome to Hollywood!
Rene Russo’s revelation this week that she was provided an ice truck while filming the new movie Just Getting Started in Arizona’s (admittedly intense) summer heat was a reminder of that.
Take a look at some of the weirdest and funniest things celebrities have required while making movies.
1. Rene Russo’s ice truck
The Thor actress — who’s best known for her work in ’90s movies, such as Lethal Weapon 3 and Outbreak — explained in an interview on Live With Kelly and Ryan that she was excited about the offer to work on her new film. But the shooting location gave her pause.
“I said to the director, who I love, Ron Shelton, I said, ‘Look, I want to do this. I love you. I don’t even have to read the script. I don’t know who’s in it, but it’s August in Arizona. It’s like 105 degrees,” Russo said. “And if it’s not 78 with a breeze, I can’t work. It’s not that I’m a prima donna,” she said. “It’s that I have no interior cooling system, so I will faint. I will not make it.”
The older she gets, Russo said, the worse it is.
She proposed a solution: an ice truck in which the actress could go and “freeze” when she needed to do so. Even host Kelly Ripa seemed impressed that the production agreed!
2. Jennifer Lawrence’s Kardashian tent
Famous Kardashian fan J.Law was (understandably) distressed while shooting the violent and disturbing movie Mother!, even hyperventilating and dislocating a rib at some points. “I ended up getting on oxygen,” she told Vogue in September. “I have oxygen tubes in my nostrils, and [director Darren Aronofsky]’s like, ‘It was out of focus; we’ve got to do it again.’ And I was just like, ‘Go f*** yourself.’” While she didn’t demand it in so many words, Lawrence required a retreat where she could regroup before going on.
That’s when the crew stepped in and built her what she called “a Kardashian tent,” where she could enjoy some downtime with her fellow reality TV fans.
“It was a tent that had pictures of the Kardashians and Keeping Up With the Kardashians playing on a loop — and gumballs,” she told the magazine. “My happy place.”
3. Jack Nicholson’s Celtics censorship
On the set of 2006’s The Departed, Nicholson reportedly didn’t want cast or crew wearing Boston Celtics gear. He’s a longtime fan of the Los Angeles Lakers, and anyone who’s watched a Lakers game knows that he’s often sitting courtside.
When it came to baseball, Nicholson told New York magazine that he also refused to wear a Boston Red Sox hat in the movie. He’s from New Jersey, so he couldn’t betray the Yankees like that.
Interestingly, Boston native Ben Affleck refused to wear a Yankees hat in 2014’s Gone Girl.
4. Mariah Carey’s stuffed lambs
Of course, Carey is on this list. Funnyman Will Ferrell revealed on a June episode of Watch What Happens Live that, on the set of his movie The House, Carey demanded … a lot. She was only appearing long enough to perform one song for a short cameo, but it was “quite a kerfuffle,” Ferrell said. Besides the fact that she was four hours late and didn’t want to do the scene as written, Ferrell said that she requested stuffed lambs — representing her fans, famously called Lambies. After all that, the cameo was cut.
5. Paris Hilton’s live lobsters
Speaking of cut cameos, hotel heiress/DJ Hilton was once lined up for a scene in Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s 2010 movie The Other Guys. While she didn’t make it into the final film, Hilton will forever be associated with it, thanks to a New York Post Page Six report that her team gave producers three pages of demands, including live lobster so she could have it prepared fresh when she was hungry — for one day of work on the movie. A rep for Hilton denied the story at the time, saying it was “totally ridiculous and untrue.” (However, Paris did once say that “Stars Are Blind” is “such a timeless song,” so there’s that.)
