Max Thieriot as Bode on 'Fire Country'

This week, Fire Country returns from a two-week break with the resolution to a cliffhanger ending, and series star and co-creator Max Thieriot warns that fans should be prepared for an “exciting, cinematic, but gut-wrenching episode.”

At the end of Episode 4, “Too Many Unknowns,” a trio of important characters were involved in an ambulance crash. Main character and inmate firefighter Bode Leone (Thieriot) was injured while battling a blaze in a remote location, so nurse Cara (Sabina Gadecki), Bode’s high school ex-girlfriend and the mother of his potential daughter Genevieve (Alix West Lefler), paramedic Diego (Rafael de la Fuente), the fiancé of Bode’s recent ex-girlfriend Gabriela (Stephanie Arcila), and a corrections officer guarding Bode set off to take him to a hospital.

While they were driving through the woods, a windstorm started kicking up. A tree fell across the ambulance’s path, and it happened so quickly that they smashed right into it.

Does anyone die in the ambulance crash?

We don't know yet. The episode ended with an overhead shot of the ambulance on its side, lights still flashing, all alone in the forest as the storm intensifies.

Things were pretty intense inside of that ambulance before the crash, too. Cara had just told Bode that she didn’t want him to have a relationship with Genevieve. Whether he’s her father or not, Cara believes he’s too unstable and trouble-prone to be involved in Genevieve’s life. Cara feels that even though Bode is a good guy at heart, the fact is that he’s presently incarcerated, and Gen has been through so much pain and trauma lately (the people she thought were her parents died, and she found out the woman she thought was her sister is actually her mother) that it would be irresponsible to introduce the potential for more pain.

So if anything bad happens to Cara in that ambulance, it will be tragic.

Also, as Bode was coming out of a daze after nearly dying in a fire, he told Gabriela that he loved her, and Diego overheard. So Diego is really not happy with Bode. And now they may have to rely on each other to survive.

What to expect in the aftermath of the ambulance crash

Thieriot says that all of that tension will add up to an action-packed (there’s a fire tornado!) and game-changing episode of Fire Country.

“It has a lot going on,” Thieriot tells Parade. “We really sort of dive deeper into some characters that we don't know a ton about, and we get to see other characters in different ways than we've seen them thus far in the series. And obviously, we land in a place where a lot of things will change.”

Thieriot says that what happens in this episode will have lasting impacts on many characters for the rest of the season.

“The entire episode is an emotional roller coaster for a lot of people," he says, "and we get to see them fight to be with each other and fight against this fire tornado that’s taking place and experience some massive wins and losses."

Fire Country airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET on CBS. It's available to stream on Paramount+.
