Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan: A Complete Breakup and Divorce Timeline

Back in 2018 Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan devastated their fans by announcing their separation after nearly nine years of marriage. Up until that point, the duo, who met on the set of Step Up in 2006 and got hitched in 2009, appeared to be one of Hollywood's happiest power duos, with their epic appearance on Lip Sync Battle widely regarded as one of pop culture's greatest celebrity couple moments to this day.

For the most part, the pair remained a united front throughout their transition from spouses to coparents of their daughter, Everly, born in 2013. “We have lovingly chosen to separate as a couple,” they wrote in their joint announcement in April 2018. “We fell deeply in love so many years ago and have had a magical journey together. Absolutely nothing has changed about how much we love one another, but love is a beautiful adventure that is taking us on different paths for now.”

Six years later, however, the pair still haven't reached a financial settlement—and it looks like their amicable split hit a speed bump over Tatum's profits from the Magic Mike franchise.

April 11, 2024: According to court documents obtained by People, Dewan has called on Tatum to testify in court over “issues related to the parties' marriage, including business and financial activities.” Tatum also adds Dewan to his own witness list.

Dewan has reportedly singled out Magic Mike as their “largest issue” and is looking for “an equal division of the Magic Mike intellectual property.” According to People, Dewan claims the franchise was “developed and cofinanced by Channing during marriage with community effort and marital funds,” but Tatum has “colluded” to “shelter” the profits from his ex partner.

Meanwhile, Tatum refutes this claim, with his lawyers arguing that the actor “continued to create and develop [Magic Mike] since [their] separation.” Based on the court filing, it seems Tatum—who is currently engaged to Zoë Kravitz—is eager to finalize their divorce settlement, having “exhausted all efforts in an attempt to settle this matter without litigation.”

January 17, 2023: Channing Tatum opens up about the divorce while promoting Magic Mike’s Last Dance. “In the beginning [the split] was super scary and terrifying,” he tells Vanity Fair. “Your life just turns on its axis. This whole plan that you had literally just turns into sand and goes through your fingers and you’re just like, ‘Oh, shit. What now?’” He doesn't go into heavy detail about the cause for their split but says the pair had “grown apart.”

“I think we told ourselves a story when we were young, and we just kept telling ourselves that story, no matter how blatantly life was telling us that we were so different,” he says. “But when you’re actually parents, you really understand differences between the two of you. Because it is screaming at you all day long. How you parent differently, how you look at the world, how you go through the world.”

August 18, 2023: As Tatum and Kravitz's relationship begins to go public, sources tell E! News that Dewan is unbothered. “Jenna doesn’t get involved in who he dates,” the source says. “She wants the best for Channing and hopes that he is healthy and happy. She leaves it at that.”

August 4, 2021: Jenna Dewan denies slamming Tatum during her interview on the Dear Gabby podcast. While being interviewed, she opens up about the “postpartum anxiety” she faced shortly after her daughter Everly’s birth, partially due to her and Tatum's mismatched work schedules. “I had to travel with her, and at the time, Chan wasn’t available to be with us for the most part,” Dewan says on the podcast, according to People. “So it was me, my doula, and Evie all by ourselves traveling at six weeks.”

She continues, “You know, you’re up a couple times in the night and then you’re working all day. I was breastfeeding, I was pumping, I was without a partner. I mean, it was just craziness.”

After the interview goes live, Dewan claims her words were taken out of context by media outlets. “It’s unfortunate that countless media outlets have taken an important conversation on a woman’s experience with postpartum issues and pulled quotes to make it appear that I was slamming my daughter’s father, something I would never do,” she writes in a note posted on X.com. “As two working parents, we both faced challenges at the time, but I speak only for myself and not about him. Anyone who actually listens to the interview, something I encourage everyone to do, will clearly see that my words have been distorted for clicks and to push false, salacious gossip with no regard for the actual people involved or the message intended.”

October 2019: Dewan opens up about the split in her book, Gracefully You: How to Live Your Best Life Every Day. “I’d come to realize the dynamic I was in wasn’t serving me nor was it serving my daughter,” she writes, per People. “First and foremost I had to accept the realization this isn’t working and had moved into hurting.”

She also addresses fans' perceptions of their relationship, writing, “The public saw Channing and I in this idealized romanticized light. This made things difficult for me because I like being as honest and real as I can.”

She also gets candid in an interview with People, admitting she was “gutted” by the divorce. “It was so difficult for me. It was the loss of an idealistic future for myself and my life,” she says. “What does that now look like for me? Where do I begin? I met him when I was 24. I didn’t know life without Chan.”

She also says the pair are focused on coparenting their daughter through this “new chapter,” adding, “We’re all aware that it’s a new normal; we’re all getting used to it. You can still have a relationship and just because the forms change as to who you are to each other, it doesn’t take away from the love that we had or that we shared all those years.”
