Sports fuels are meant to hydrate the body, but a lot of the drinks on the market are filled with processed sugar and chemical dyes. This week’s makeover is Gatorade. The recipe can be whipped up in about 5 minutes and your thirst will be quenched in a matter of seconds. This hydrating refreshment delivers beneficial phytonutrients, potassium, electrolytes, and trace minerals, and it can double as a “wake-up-your-gut morning drink” with the optional addition of probiotics.

The three most important ingredients are cucumbers, coconut water and himalayan pink salt. Phytonutrients from the cucumber are valuable for their antioxidants and anti-inflammatory/anti-cancer agents. The coconut water is an excellent source of potassium and assists with electrolyte functions, water balance, and enhanced muscle strength and recovery. Himalayan pink salt contains a bounty of trace minerals that are crucial for all body functions as each element provides unique benefits. Not to mention, staying hydrated helps maintain a healthy skin glow.

  • 4 cups chopped organic cucumbers

  • 2 cups coconut water

  • 3 tablespoons lemon or lime juice

  • 2 tablespoons chopped mint

  • 1 ½ tablespoons maple syrup or honey

  • ½ teaspoon teaspoon himalayan pink salt

  • 1-2 servings of probiotic powder (optional)

Yields: 3 servings

Place all ingredients in a blender. Mix at high speed. Strain mixture. Refrigerate. Serve well chilled.
