Academy Award-nominated actress Winona Ryder was one of the most iconic and profitable actresses of the ‘90s — but her first beauty campaign will be Marc Jacobs Beauty Spring 2016. This morning, the social media-savvy fashion designer announced on Instagram that Ryder, his friend of “two-and-a-half decades,” will be the new face of his beauty line. The accompanying photo from the campaign was shot by David Sims and styled by Katie Grand, the soft retro hairdo was styled by Guido Palau, and the cat-eye beauty look was done by makeup artist Diane Kendal. Kendal used the Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara, Fineliner Ultra-Skinny Gel Eye Crayons in Blacquer and (Big)Eyes, and New Nudes Sheer Gel Lipstick in Strange Magic — all from the new collection, out in February 2016 exclusively at Sephora, select Marc Jacobs stores, and online at sephora.com and marcjacobsbeauty.com.

Jacobs notes that the beauty look reminds him of one of his favorite films, The Last Year at Marienbad. “The force of the surreal calm, and painstaking fetishistic polish of this film and its heroine are truly ‘ON FLEEK’ and continues to inspire me to date,” he wrote on Instagram. “No one I know could exude the adjectives I’ve listed as perfectly as Winona does… She does not model the look she gets into the role — and exudes it!”

This may be Ryder’s first official beauty campaign, but she has appeared in several Marc Jacobs campaigns in the past, starting with Spring/Summer 2003 and most recently with Fall 2015. The 44-year-old Beetlejuice star was caught and charged for shoplifting in Saks Fifth Avenue in 2001 (a cashmere Marc Jacobs sweater was amongst the stolen items), but she told Interview that it was “almost like the best thing that could have happened” because it forced her to explore other paths. It also landed her the controversial Marc Jacobs campaign. “I asked Winona to do the campaign because I thought she looked so beautiful in all these pictures that we’ve seen recently, regardless of whether they were from the trial,” he explained.

She spoke with Allure today about her new beauty campaign. “What I love about Marc — and there are many things — is that we both have a very similar penchant for past eras, and the history of fashion and culture,” she said. “I’ve always loved the way that he incorporates all of that into his work without just ripping it off.” She explained that even though she has been an actress for decades, she still needs help at photoshoots. “I’m always trying to get camera guys to tell me what side is the better one for me because an an actress, it’s important not to be aware of stuff like that,” she said. Ryder also shared her personal beauty journey with the magazine, noting that in the ‘80s, the ideal beauty look was blonde and buxom. “I don’t know, when I started out acting I really was not — and I’m not trying to be self-deprecating — I was not considered a beauty,” she said. “I was the opposite of what was going on in film… The first five things I did, I was cast as what was literally described in the script as 'the ugly duckling.’” Ryder admitted to still being very terrible at applying makeup herself and being lucky that she has a beauty team to help her out.

On Instagram, Jacobs calls Ryder a “brilliant mind, talent, and physical beauty like no other” — confirming that it’s never too late to get an it-girl beauty campaign.
