There Was a Secret Pilot for Top Gear USA Nobody Ever Saw

Top Gear script editor Richard Porter dishes on his time working on the series on this week's Smoking Tire Podcast, including the fact that there was a very early pilot for Top Gear USA that didn't take off.

If you're a car enthusiast, you're no doubt familiar with the BBC's Top Gear, the comedic British car show that ended when co-host Jeremy Clarkson decided punching a coworker was more important than keeping his job.

As entertaining as Top Gear was for so many people, you have to imagine there are more than a few stories to be told about the hijinks that went on behind the scenes. Unsurprisingly, there are, and one of the show's former writers, Richard Porter, is telling them.

He's written a new book about his time on the show, and to promote it, he stopped by The Smoking Tire's podcast to spend several hours joking, telling stories about his time on the show, and even spilling a few secrets. For instance, before the current Top Gear USA there was a pilot for a US version of the program with Adam Carolla that didn't take off. While that one is known, Porter reveals that there was a pilot before that one that hasn't been seen and is barely known of. Apparently it was awful.

If you're a Top Gear fan, go ahead and give this one a listen (even if it is super long).
