Getting into the minds of Chinese car buyers has become the top goal for most automakers around the world, but only Volkswagen has gone to the extremes of crowd sourcing 119,00 car concept ideas from China. Who wouldn't want a hover car that glides silently above dirty city streets?

The car shown in the video below is one of three concepts VW highlighted from its "People's Car Project." The two-seat Hover Car would levitate just off the ground above an electromagnetic grid. The Music Car imagines a VW covered in LEDs that would change patterns depending on the music the driver was listening to. And the Smart Key merges a regular key with a tiny LCD screen that offers data on fuel efficiency and other driving habits.

"The creative ideas from the 'People's Car Project' give us a valuable insight into the wishes of Chinese drivers," Simon Loasby, head of design at Volkswagen Group China, said in a release. "The trend is towards safe cars that can easily navigate overcrowded roads and have a personal, emotional and exciting design."

VW feels that the People's Car Project has been successful enough that it will extend its planned one-year run indefinitely, and consider bringing it to other countries. It's an inexpensive way for VW to be seen as the car company that's listening to its audience, even if what it's saying sounds a little crazy.
