Arnold Schwarzenegger Shows Politician The Best Way To Terminate Old Cars

California Senate leader Kevin de León conducted a public crushing of a 1984 Ford Ranger pickup truck to promote a new pilot rebate program helping low income families drive cleaner, more fuel efficient vehicles. Arnold Schwarzenegger saw this and thought the crushing was a tad tame. So he sent de León a video showing the senator how it should be done.

According to Hybrid Cars, de León’s publicity stunt took place last week at the Capital, underlining the new Enhanced Fleet Modernization Program set to benefit low income residents in regions of California by allowing them to trade in their old, dirty car for either a new or used fuel efficient model. The newer and more efficient the vehicle, the more the rebate will be.

Residents in the lowest income bracket (<225% of the federal poverty level) who scrap their old car and buy a plug-in hybrid like a Chevrolet Volt or an all-electric vehicle such as the Nissan Leaf would receive $9,500 towards their purchase under the new program, as well as $2,000 towards an at-home charging unit (if they bought an EV) and an additional $2,500 if that car was purchased new.

Having seen the above stunt by de León to promote the project, Schwarzenegger offered the following statement: “I know to sell this idea of how important it is to have clean cars, you all are going to have a wonderful demonstration of crushing a car. But let me show you my style of getting rid of dirty cars.”
