Christmas has come early for Doctor Who fans. BBC America announced Wednesday that Alex Kingston, known to Whovians as the Doctor’s wife River Song, will return to meet her husband’s latest incarnation for the first time on the Doctor Who Christmas special airing Dec. 25.

“To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special,” Kingston said in a statement. “I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read-through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!” And yes, if you’re wondering how River Song can return — seeing as the last time the Doctor saw her, she was a ghost — Who executive producer has an explanation. Sort of: “As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time.”

The new season of Doctor Who premieres Sept. 19 on BBC America.
