Zoning commission to act on solar energy system

Apr. 2—DANVILLE — The Danville Area Planning and Zoning Commission will consider approving a solar energy system at its regular meeting Thursday night.

The commission meets at 5:15 p.m. Thursday at the Robert E. Jones Municipal Building, 17 W. Main St.

The special use permit is requested by the City of Danville to allow for the use of site for a large-scale ground solar energy system in the AG-Agriculture Zoning District.

The vacant land is the former H&L Landfill site.

According to city officials and the petition, "The subject property is 55.84 acres in size. Located to the east of the intersection of Cunningham Avenue and Avenue C. The site has one principle structure and has been used a machine shop for the past 40 years."

Future land use map designation: recreation/open space. "Developed and undeveloped lands that are reserved for or have been made available for use by all or a significant portion of the community's residents. This would include all parklands, playgrounds and other recreation areas as well as private open space such as golf courses. This category would also include environmentally sensitive areas and areas where development is infeasible due to the presence of natural or manmade constraints," according to the city petition.

With conformity with zoning regulations, the zoning code does not require parking for this type of development.

In December, the Danville City Council approved authorizing execution of a memorandum of understanding for solar development on the H&L Landfill with TotalEnergies Distributed Generation USA, LLC. Preliminary expected system: Up to 15 MWdc of ground mounted solar photovoltaic generation.
