Uber's 'Lost and Found Index' ranks 3 Florida cities in top 10 'most forgetful'

Last week, rideshare service Uber released its 2024 “Lost and Found Index,” which breaks down what kind of items people forget in Ubers and which cities are the most forgetful when it comes to leaving things behind in the car.

Miami topped the entire list, with the most forgetful Uber passengers in the whole country, while two other Florida cities took top 10 rankings as well. Orlando placed in sixth and Tampa Bay took eighth place.

Here’s which other U.S. cities ranked on Uber’s top 10 “most forgetful” list, some of the strangest things people left in their Ubers and how to get a lost item back from Uber limbo.

How does Uber handle lost and found?

Although your Uber driver is not responsible for your forgetfulness, there are procedures for having your lost items returned to you.

“Drivers are independent contractors. Neither Uber nor drivers are responsible for the items left in a vehicle after a trip ends,” Uber’s website says. “We're here to help but can't guarantee that a driver has your item or can immediately deliver it to you.”

Here are the steps to reporting a lost item with Uber, according to its website:

We encourage you to contact your driver directly through the Uber app about a lost item by following the below steps…”

1. Tap the menu icon to open the main menu.

2. Select "Your Trips" and then the trip on which you lost the item.

3. Tap "Find lost item" and then "Contact driver about a lost item."

4. Enter your phone number to call the driver.

If you left your phone in an Uber:

“If you don't see the option to contact your driver through those steps, enter your phone number below and we'll call that number to connect you with the driver.”

If the driver:

- Answers and confirms they have the item: Coordinate a mutually convenient time and place to meet to retrieve your item.

- Doesn't answer: Leave a detailed voicemail describing your item and the best way to contact you.

“Please be considerate that the driver's personal schedule will be affected by taking time to return your item to you.”

If you are reunited with a personal item you left behind in an Uber, your account will be charged $20.

“A $20 fee is charged to your account once your lost item is returned to pay a driver for their time,” according to Uber.
