Security breaches tripled over the past year in SC

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – The number of people impacted by security breaches in the Palmetto State more than tripled over the past year.

According to the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs, data from more than 3,250,000 consumers was compromised after nearly 140 businesses reported breaches.

That’s up from 86 businesses and fewer than a million affected the year before.

Cyber experts warn we have to stay vigilant.

“I think right now, the thing we want to do is to make sure that we’re alert to any odd activity on our accounts.” Phil Yanov from Tech After Five said.

Experts suggest using strong passwords and multi-factor authentication for all banking and health accounts.

Another thing to consider is a security freeze with all three credit reporting agencies, which will stop anyone from opening new accounts in your name.
