Whatever the seventh Scream film was going to be or is now, there was always at least one likely scenario: Courteney Cox had to come back. Cox is the lone original cast member to appear in each of the latest films and, since she narrowly survived the last one, we all expected she’d return.

Now, Variety confirms that the Friends mega-star is in talks to reprise her role as Gale Weathers, the newswoman turned author who has been key to the entire Scream franchise. Cox will appear alongside Neve Campbell who, earlier this month, announced that she’d be returning to the franchise after sitting the last installment out. One of Scream’s original creators, Kevin Williamson, is directing.

And while it would be easy to just be happy about Cox’s return, almost everything about this film has a cloud of uncertainty over it. That first stemmed from the production company, Spyglass, firing Scream 5 and 6 star Melissa Barrera over comments advocating for Palestine on social media. A new report just this week then shined additional light on that with the news Radio Silence, the directing and producing team behind both of those films, was also unceremoniously “exited,” purportedly over scheduling conflicts. So even if Scream 7 is as excellent as we all want it to be, there will always be the question of “What if?”

Nevertheless, Cox returning is good news because she’s now one of two survivors from the original film, along with Campbell’s Sidney. Whatever Williamson has in store would almost have to account for both women being around.

Scream 7 does not yet have a release date but we’d imagine it’ll be sometime in early 2025.
