Hydrogen Hypercar Prototype Hits Auction Block Amid Production Delays

In a rare opportunity for automotive collectors, one of the original prototypes of the Hyperion XP-1 hydrogen hypercar has been listed for auction. Introduced by Orange County-based Hyperion in 2020, the XP-1 showcased revolutionary hydrogen fuel-cell technology aimed at redefining high-performance vehicles. Despite generating significant interest with its promise of over 2,000 horsepower and a 1,000-mile range on a single refueling, the hypercar has not yet transitioned from prototype to production.
This particular prototype, one of seven used during the XP-1's development, does not feature the heralded hydrogen fuel-cell system but is equipped with an electric propulsion system, enabling it to function as a drivable show car. Although lacking in the prototype's original performance capabilities, which boasted a 2.2-second sprint from zero to 60 mph and a top speed of 221 mph, it remains a striking example of automotive design and innovation.
Visually, the XP-1 prototype is a standout, featuring a satin titanium and sky blue finish, V-wing doors inspired by the iconic "Winged Victory of Samothrace" sculpture, and adjustable aerodynamic panels that double as solar panels. The interior matches the exterior's futuristic appeal, with a 360-degree panoramic cockpit, a large infotainment display, and luxurious midnight blue leather upholstery.
Currently up for bid on SBX Cars, the prototype's auction price has already reached €44,000 (approximately $46,840). With the auction set to close in five days, the price is expected to climb given the vehicle's rarity and unique features. The winning bidder will also receive an exclusive invitation to order and customize the production model of the XP-1, should it eventually be manufactured, with the option to trade in the prototype as part of the payment.
This auction presents a unique chance to own a piece of automotive history, albeit a prototype, from one of the most ambitious hypercar projects to date.
