Chicagoans can now request taxi through Uber app

CHICAGO — Starting Thursday, Chicagoans will be able to book a taxi ride through the Uber app.

Uber has announced a new phase of partnership with the Chicago taxi industry, which will provide nearly 100% of Chicago’s taxi drivers with access to Uber trip referrals.

The new option is available in the Uber app, and works similarly to booking a regular ride — except there will now be a taxi option.

“We firmly believe that Uber and taxis are better together. As we continue to strengthen our relationship with the taxi industry, we’re thrilled to announce this next phase of our partnership with Chicago taxi drivers,” Camiel Irving, Vice President & General Manager of US & Canada Mobility Operations at Uber. “We look forward to continuing to work closely with our taxi partners to bring the benefits of this program to more taxi drivers and cities throughout the country.”

According to Uber, riders will pay the UberX rate and will receive upfront pricing in the app.

Electric scooters may be permitted on Chicago streets after midnight

Uber said the partnership with taxi technology companies Arro and Curb Mobility has already shown success in New Your City. According to Uber, in San Francisco, where Uber has partnered with Flywheel, taxi drivers earned 30% more on average compared to drivers who did not provide Uber trips.
