Watching People Eat Durian, the World’s Smelliest Fruit, Is Hilarious

Ah, the durian. Known by some for its spiky exterior, and by most for its… distinct odor. If you can get past the unsettling, hard-to-place smell, some love the taste of the durian — while others totally detest it. Truly, the durian is probably the most divisive fruit in existence, a shining example of the love-it-or-hate-it mentality.

In this video, a number of first-time durian eaters try out the stinky fruit. “I know it smells like a**,” one participant says before the fruit is even cut open. Another adds that it smells like “your freezer when you don’t clean it out.” Then, the fun part. When the southeast Asian fruit is cut open, the faces range from shock to horror as the true power of the durian’s funk is unleashed. Some of the adjectives used to describe the scent by the video participants are: farts, wet garbage, trash, old eggs, and “mayonnaise and body parts”… sounds appetizing.

However, as always, the taste itself is divisive, with some people enjoying the melon-like fruit, one comparing it to a banana combined with a pineapple, and others utterly repulsed. Then again, that’s only if they can get past the smell and bring themselves to take a bite.
