High school students work hard to ask their classmates to prom in the most creative ways — often through grand gestures and creative asks. One student recently ran more than five miles just to get the coveted date. Peri Baker went a different route and modified an infamous — and controversial — quote from President Trump to ask her Brookland-Cayce High School classmate, John Broughton, to prom.

The South Carolina student created a poster that read, “‘If you weren’t my best friend perhaps I’d be dating you.’ Prom?” Above the quote she Photoshopped her face onto Ivanka Trump‘s body and Broughton’s onto President Trump‘s.

Broughton, who said yes, posted a photo of the couple on his Instagram account.

We bout to snatch them crowns… ????????‍♂️???????? #promposal

The quote is an obvious reference to President Trump’s infamous quote from a 2006 interview with his daughter Ivanka on The View — when he said, “If Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her.”

Yahoo Style spoke to the teenager to find out what prompted her to ask in such a manner. “I knew I wanted the promposal to be unique,” she says. “My date and I share an interest in politics and opposition to Donald Trump, so I knew I wanted the promposal to include a political reference. I hoped my date would be excited and humored by this promposal.”

Baker revealed that Broughton and many of her peers did understand the reference on the poster — but some didn’t find the humor in it.

“There have been a few classmates to not understand the reference and a few who were angered by it, but most caught on and found it hilarious,” she says. “One of our classmates even said that this is probably the best promposal he has ever seen.”

Although the idea was done in jest, she shared that she didn’t want to miss out on an opportunity to make a political statement through her promposal. “In this political climate it is important that people continue to stand up for what they believe in,” she says. “Even though my promposal was meant to be funny, it was also an opportunity to have our voices heard. I decided to represent our voices of advocacy in this promposal, and I’m so glad I did.”

Political notions aside, the two seem to be very excited for the big night.
