Salma Hayek Is So Beautiful (Smart, Intelligent, Etc.) It Hurts

Salma Hayek is all the things.

The actress appears on the August cover of Allure looking strikingly stunning: her wavy hair pulled up into a chignon, sporting pink lipstick and a bold cat eye in her lingerie.

But don’t underestimate the beauty — because she’s got brains, too. “I’m upset about the state of the world,” the 48-year-old confessed to the magazine, which hits newsstands July 28. “It upsets me. So I try to do something, so at least I know that Im not just sitting with upsetness [sic] in my stomach.” Part of this seems to stem from becoming a parent, to 7-year-old Valentina Paloma Pinault. “We live in a time where theres so much violence and so much hate and so much racism,” she said, in reference to her new animated film, Prophet, which she produced and voiced. “And I think it’s important we expose our children, our teenagers, to this kind of content.”

But making movies for the sake of not only her own kid, but others as well, wasn’t her first reaction regarding her career after giving birth. In fact, she wanted to retire from the silver screen but her husband, François-Henri Pinault, convinced her to stick with her craft. She explained, “…it was Francois who said, ‘Oh no, you’re going back to work.’ And I said, ‘I don’t want to.’ ‘Well, you have to. We’re not putting up with some lazy girl in the house. That¹s not who I married.’ And then he said something so beautiful,” she goes on. “‘I don¹t want to be deprived of your work. I want to watch it, too. And the world has not seen the best of you yet. So you cannot stop until some of that is put out.’ So he sort of really pushed me, like, ‘Get up on your feet and get out there!’ And he was right. It’s important not to lost that part of yourself.”

Despite the initial work-life balance struggle she wrestled with, Hayek now has her priorities straight. Not only has she been producing more — in addition to The Prophet, she’s also the executive producer of Septembers of Shiraz, and has two films being released in 2015 in which she stars — but she still makes her family a priority. “I have never been apart from my daughter for more than two weeks,” she revealed. “And same with Francois. We don¹t separate for long period [sic] of time. Never.”

Even though she doesn’t separate from her husband for prolonged periods of time (“I always miss him when were not together,” she admitted. “It’s sort of nice to miss each other a little bit.”), she still has her independence. “I have a system in my life that I have chosen, where my expenses from before the marriage are my expenses,” she said. “Maybe that’s  also part of what works great in my marriage,” she adds. “I still have my independence. But he likes it. I have my problems, and I don’t have to dump them on him. I take care of them on my own. And I get a lot of respect from him.”

And more.
