Princess Diana’s Atelier Versace Dress Sold for $200,000

When she was alive, Princess Diana wasn’t one to treasure her beautiful clothes, keeping them collecting dust in a palace closet. Instead, she saw the power of fashion, and her own celebrity, and sold many of her famous frocks to raise money for charity. Even in death, her dresses are still selling with extreme markup. An Atelier Versace gown the royal wore on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar went up for auction recently and sold for $200,000.

The figure-hugging ivory dress is embellished with “gold tone studs and pyramids, and encased faceted glass in shades of blue topaz, aqua marine, and white in a geometric and swirled motif. It was reportedly the first gown Gianni Versace, Donatella’s brother, designed for HRH. She wore it for a photo shoot with Patrick Demarchelier in 1991 and then the images were reused for a special Harper’s cover in November 1997 commemorating her following her untimely death.

According to invaluable.com, the site that hosted the Hollywood Legends Auction 2015, the gown was acquired directly from Versace and was even  originally on a hanger that read “Lady Diana.” Atelier Versace gowns typically sell for $10,000 and up, bidding started at $30,000, the dress was estimated to be $80,000, and the auction closed at $200,000.

A one-of-a-kind piece worn by a one-of-a-kind woman — no wonder it cost so much!
