Gloves are having a moment. Once an indispensable item that a lady – or gentleman – could never be seen without, the accessory took a costume-y turn until very recently. Earlier this year, Amal Clooney arrived at the Golden Globe Awards on the arm of her husband, George, while wearing white, opera-length gloves, which she had allegedly “whipped up” prior to the ceremony. The gloves immediately became an object of debate between red carpet aficionados—genius glamour or total faux-pas? The jury is still out.

Soon thereafter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg attended the President’s State of the Union Address in a pair of short fishnet gloves. Was there a trend brewing or was this just another “lawyers being lawyers” thing? When Lady Gaga showed up at the Academy Awards this past weekend in a pair of custom red leather gloves by Alaïa, it was obvious that handy accessory was making an official comeback. If you still refuse to believe me, may I please point out to these most excellent glove examples that have just walked down the Milanese runways? The Italians take their fashion verrry seriously and they would not steer us wrong.

It all started at No. 21, where designer Alessandro Dell’Acqua took his uber-romantic vision and extended it all the way to the fingertips with delicate black lace elbow-length gloves that looked exquisite on their own, or underneath pale peach semi-sheer layers. Very senzuale! At Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld chose texture to make a statement, with an asymmetric fringe that perfectly complimented his shiny leathers and nubby shearlings. And at Prada, Miuccia turned everyone’s world upside down with a futuristic collection, that of course, included gloves. Whether worn extra long to keep your arms warm while wearing short sleeves—is there a chicer way to deal with the cold? Spoiler Alert! There isn’t!—or a short pair to perfectly compliment your expensive handbags, gloves are here to stay.
