You'll Never Guess Kendall Jenner's Biggest Fear

What happens when you get Joan Smalls and Kendall Jenner talking for three minutes? A lot more than you would think. On the heels of the announcement that Jenner will serve as the new spokesmodel for Estée Lauder, Smalls, who became the first Latina model to represent the brand in 2011, sat down with the 19-year-old fresh face (literally and figuratively) to talk about how the two first met, momager Kris, Kendall's beauty must-haves, and her biggest – quite irrational – fear. But the interview was more than just a formal Q & A. The Puerto Rican model recalled dishing out unexpected advice to Jenner that is especially surprising coming from someone who works in the ever-so-feminine world of fashion and cosmetics. Here are the ten best snippets from the two beauties’ banter.

1. How Jenner found out about her Estée Lauder deal. Jenner noted that someone broke the news to her via text whilst waiting in the wings during Paris fashion week. And she couldn’t tell a soul except for her mom. And although the momager probably orchestrated the deal, it didn’t keep her from shedding a tear. “My mom was the only person I told. She was crying, but then she cries at everything,” Jenner said.

2. Smalls told Jenner to man-up early on. “I was telling you to be more boyish and manly,” Smalls recalled while discussing Jenner’s pre-Paris runway jitters. Apparently the cure to being confident in girly garb (high heels and a long dress) is to act the complete opposite.

3. A profession in cosmetics is in the Kardashian blood. Jenner has done her fair share in fashion, but this move to the makeup business is a seemingly natural transition. “Randomly enough, my older sisters went to a makeup school when they were younger, so they’re all really good at it. They’ve always told me that ‘natural is better,’” she revealed.

4. There are boob guys and butt guys and lip girls and eye girls. Kendall prefers the latter. “Eyes. I like a good eye. Sometimes I like a little bit of a cat-eye, or a wing is nice,” Jenner said. “And lots of mascara. I love mascara.”

5. She has fellow A-list role models. Even this international “It Girl” has beauty icons (which makes her just like us, right?). On her list are Angelina Jolie, for her looks, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, for her style, and Rihanna because “she kills it all the time.”

6. Her must-have beauty products are pretty simple. Proving that she’s yet again just like us, the young model’s laundry list of necessities is super short — lip balm (always) and moisturizer (but only on airplanes). And Jenner sticks to a tried-and-true bedtime ritual: “I just need to feel refreshed and clean so I try to wash my face before I go to bed, and I use an eye cream.”

7. Primary colors are Jenner’s go-to nail hues. “I keep it really neutral with nudes and grays. But if I’m going on vacation, I like color. My favorite polishes are royal blue or red.”

8. Sam Smith has her heart. It looks like I’m not the only one who has Sam Smith’s melodic tunes on repeat. Apparently Jenner and I are one in the same. “I know every single Sam Smith song, I’m obsessed with him!” she admitted. I wonder if the 22-year-old Brit knows he tugs at this in-demand model’s heartstrings…

9. Her biggest fear takes the cake for being the most irrational. “Being crushed by a big rock. Don’t ask!” (I won’t.)

10. She has taking a selfie down to a science. Jenner likes to go au natural when it comes to selfies, which is in line with the Kardashian clan’s supposed beauty practices (see number 3). Jenner attributes her selfie skills to good lighting, no filters (do you dare?), and knowing your good side. But it comes down to one thing: “Practice makes perfect.”
