On the red carpet, Angelina Jolie sticks to what works. If she’s not borrowing from the boys and wearing a well-tailored tuxedo, the actress usually opts for a dress with a tight-fitted bodice that shows off her figure in a neutral color. The 39-year-old didn’t stray from her somewhat predictable signature style at the Australian premiere of her new film, Unbroken.

Wearing a lace gown by GUCCI Première, the fashion house’s haute couture collection, Jolie, who directed the movie, which is based on the bestselling book of the same name, might have played it safe but she definitely stunned. The strapless black and white dress with fishtail train fit perfectly and minimal accessories, pulled back hairstyle, and simple makeup made the gown’s intricate details stand out.

Seeing the mother five wearing lace is rather surprising. Jolie has never worn a pattern on the red carpet before and has never been pictured in real life straying from a very neutral color palette. Even though the shape of the dress is an old standby for the star, it’s nice to see the newlywed take a risk. In fact, this is the first time she didn’t wear black to an appearance since she wore an emerald green Versace gown at the Golden Globes in 2011.

With her husband, Brad Pitt, by her side, (this is the first time the pair have appeared in public together since announcing their nuptials) the couple premiered the biopic in Sydney, one of the many shooting locations of the World War II movie based on Louis Zamperini’s story. The movie is set to hit theaters stateside on Dec. 25 so until then, Jolie’s fashion choices leading up to the release will hopefully be entertaining enough.
