Kanye West Really Did Arrange His Models by Skin Color

For those of you eagle-eyed fashion fiends who had a feeling that Kanye West had arranged the models in his Yeezy Season 2 presentation Wednesday by skin color… your suspicions have been confirmed.

Thursday, West’s wife and doting fangirl Kim Kardashian posted three images to both her Twitter and Instagram, each featuring models of similar skin tones captioned “LIGHT,” “MEDIUM,” and “DARK.”

West, who collaborated with visual artist Vanessa Beecroft on the show, dressed each model in clothing that seemed to coordinate with his or her skin tone. Models with the lightest skin stood in the front of the even space during the finale, with the darkest skinned models standing in the back, forming a subtle gradient of nudes.

But despite the possibly negative connotations that could come from categorizing people by skin color, West’s show was much more diverse—both in terms of race and body type—than the vast majority of shows that walked New York Fashion Week. “I like form, I like shape,” West told Andre Leon Talley after the show. “I like all people. I try to demonstrate that with my casting.”
