Hervé Leger Employee Out Following Inappropriate Bandage Dress Comments

Update: The Hervé Leger employee who made comments insinuating certain people shouldn’t wear bandage dresses, is no longer associated with the company. Patrick Couderc has left MJH Fashion, the British distributor of Hervé Léger.

According to one Hervé Leger representative, the brand’s famous bandage dresses aren’t meant for everyone. Patrick Couderc, Managing Director for Hervé Léger ​London (which is owned by MJH Fashion, the British distributor of the brand, and not BCBGMAXAZRIA Group which distributes it in the United States), told the Daily Mail that lesbians, those of a certain age, and voluptuous women should steer clear of the silhouette.

“If you’re a committed lesbian and you are wearing trousers all your life, you won’t want to buy a Leger dress. Lesbians would want to be rather butch and leisurely,“ he said, referring to the look’s signature fit, which was created in the 1980s, recently re-popularized thanks to the Kardashians and Paris Hilton, and literally as tight as a bandage. 

Couderc also believes the dress has become a victim of its own success, with knockoffs making the look accessible to everyone, which is how he suggests it’s ended up on the wrong kind of people. He advised that “voluptuous” women and those with “very prominent hips and a very flat chest” avoid the bandage frock. Additionally, older women who are "displaying everything like you’re 23” should avoid the body-con dress.

In fact, even if you are a celebrity with whatever Couderc believes is the ideal figure, he’s probably still not OK with you wearing an Herve Leger look. He “refuses to give free dresses to celebrities if they are judged to lack sufficient class.” Without specifying what exactly is sufficient, he says only that he prefers  “people with an expertise.” What expertise, he doesn’t say, though he does point to Sex And The City actress Kim Cattrall as the ideal Herver Leger wearer.

In a statement, BCBGMAXAZRIA Group said that were “shocked and appalled by Patrick Couderc’s comments made in the Mail on Sunday” and clarified that he’s not an authorized spokesperson for the brand.
