Cara Delevingne Professes Her Love for Girlfriend St. Vincent in 'Vogue' Cover Shoot

Landing a Vogue cover is a big deal. Landing a Vogue cover as a model is an even bigger deal. And landing a Vogue cover all by yourself, without a famous friend, five other models, or an athlete as accessory, almost never happens. Since 2007, only Natalia Vodianova, Christy Turlington, and Gisele have had the honor—all of whom have decades of experience behind them and enjoy icon status within the industry—and Kate Upton, who was featured on the June issue in 2013 at the peak of “Dougie” fever. Add Cara Delevingne to that list. Just this year, the 22-year-old Brit has played a starring role in a major film, Paper Towns, left her modeling agency, and gone public with her very chic relationship with St. Vincent. Now Vogue’s getting behind the new Cara.

Rob Haskell interviews the model-turned-actress in Seattle, where she’s filming the hugely anticipated Suicide Squad, and though Delevingne’s yet to release any sort of statement (though she wouldn’t, would she), she makes it sound like modeling is indeed behind her. “I’m not sure I understand what fashion is anymore,” she tells the magazine. “I admit I was terrified to leave. I mean, the bubble gives you a kind of dysfunctional family. When you’re in it, you get it. And the second you’re out of it, you’re like, What the hell just happened?”

As Haskell points out, Delevingne’s modeling success largely relied on her legendary personality, which means she might just make it as an actress. (Her face leaves nothing to be desired of course, but Kate Moss is the only other model in her league who’s short enough to prove distracting on a runway—5′8″.) Karlie Kloss says, “She can make anyone fall in love with her. But it’s misunderstanding her to think she’s just the life of the party. Yes, she’s the life of the party. But she’s extremely serious about her work.” And Stella McCartney adds, “The thing about Cara is that she’s more than just a model—she stands for something in her generation’s eyes.”

In the interview, Delevingne credits her relationship with St. Vincent for her current contentment. "I think that being in love with my girlfriend is a big part of why I’m feeling so happy with who I am these days. And for those words to come out of my mouth is actually a miracle.” She also opens up about feeling out of place in the “parties–and–horse” world in which she grew up in London, her mother’s heroin addiction, and the depression she struggled with as a teenager.
