Amy Schumer Is So Over That Age-Old Question: Who Wore It Best?

Amy Schumer, Jordin Sparks, and Fergie all wore the same Halston Heritage dress at some point. The black floor-length gown features a slit that lets the left leg slip out, side cutouts reveal some torso skin, and gold metal is featured in both the belt and halter top. The Fashion Spot recognized the dress’ reoccurrence on the red carpet and asked its readers to weigh in on the best dressed in a style showdown.

When THS shared the story on Twitter asking the same question, the comedienne was the first to cast her vote:

Sparks, completely flattered, immediately responded saying, “Wait a minute. You’re awesome. Okay bye. Lol.” But Schumer, not wanting to leave Fergie out, nominated her for the hop honor as well, adding, “Or we can stop putting women against each other!”

Schumer, an outspoken feminist, has perviously taken aim at the media’s treatment and portrayal of women. On her Comedy Central series, Inside Amy Schumer, one sketch called “Last F***able Day," tackled unrealistic expectations placed on aging actresses, featuring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tina Fey, and Patricia Arquette. Another, Emmy nominated “12 Angry Men,” is an episode-long parody of the classic film with 12 jurors deliberating over whether Schumer is hot enough to be a star. The “Girl, You Don’t Need Makeup” skit took on the beauty standards and the men that disingenuously assure women of their natural beauty to the tune of One Direction.

When asked by Glamour how to have fun with fashion without judging one another, she said that “not everyone’s wired to understand how to dress. I don’t have that chip. I’ve sometimes not even wanted to leave the house because I can’t find an outfit.” She added, “Appearance has so little to do with where we should get our confidence from. But everywhere we turn we’re told we’re supposed to look this certain way. Sometimes I don’t know the difference between J.Lo or Beyonce or Kim Kardashian, if I look quickly! But confidence has nothing to do with how you look. I feel happiest when I’m with friends and I’m working really hard.”

Schumer isn’t the only one to raise issue with women being held up and compared to one another. Gwyneth Paltrow, actress and founder of GOOP, when asked to judge herself against the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Blake Lively, and other celebrities-turned-lifestyle gurus, challenged the question and its sexist undertones. “This is a very interesting question, because I wonder if George Clooney would be asked about Puff Daddy’s ancillary liquor line…I’m fascinated how the media in particular are so confounded by entrepreneurial women doing something outside of their box.“

Additionally, #askhermore has attempted to change the conversation surrounding fashion and red carpets. The campaign has successfully shifted the public’s perception of the mani-cam and the place for “What are you wearing?” has been threatened. Maybe “Who wore it best?” is next.
