3 Tips for Rocking a Monochromatic Suit à la Colton Haynes

Earlier this week, Colton Haynes brightened up the red carpet of San Andreas when he arrived in a bright pink suit from Marc Jacobs. “He had actually saved this look from Style.com as an idea for the premiere, unbeknownst to me,” his stylist, Sean Knight told Yahoo Style. “My instinct was to go with the pink dress shirt and tie. We felt like this was a bold, unique, and sophisticated look, and yet there was a still something really fun and happy about it.”  The full monochrome ensemble is not for everyone, but if you’re willing to wear the trend, here’s how.

Opt for Solid Shades.
When going monochromatic try mixing different prints within the same tonal family, but keep it solid. “It’s probably best to stay away from anything too drab, like brown, khaki, beige,” says Knight. “I would also stay away from anything too saturated and solid primary colors. You don’t want to look garish or goofy. Black, white, and pastels tend to work the best. Mix different shades of the same tone to add dimension and sophistication to your look. Colton’s look definitely had a few different shades of flamingo going on.”

For example, by pairing this burgundy suit from Express with a brighter red tee with stripe detail allows the suit to go straight from the office to a weekend getaway.

Dress It Up With a Polo.

Fit Is Key.
“Above all else, make sure it fits,” says Knight. “There’s nothing worse than a boxy looking jacket, or sleeves and pants that are too long. I see ankles drowning in bunchy fabric on the red carpet all the time and I really wonder why these A-listers forgot to get their pants hemmed properly. If you’re trying to rock a monochromatic look, it draws even more attention to these details. So make sure you get your stuff tailored!”
