Ferrari only just launched its first regular-production hybrid, the SF90 Stradale, and it's already setting its sights on an all-electric car. At today's annual shareholders meeting, Ferrari chairman and interim CEO John Elkann announced that the company would launch its first all-electric supercar in 2025.

"You can be sure this will be everything you dream the engineers and designers at Maranello can imagine for such a landmark in our history," said Elkann in a transcript of his remarks provided by Ferrari. No other details on the car were provided, so we'll have to wait to get a better idea of what's coming.

The all-electric Ferrari has had a strange gestation to this point. Former CEO, the late Sergio Marchionne declared a Ferrari EV an "almost obscene concept" back in 2016, but two years later conceded that the company would eventually offer an electric supercar. In late 2019, former CEO Louis Camilleri said a Ferrari EV wouldn't arrive until after 2025. Now, Ferrari says we should see the car in 2025.

This back and forth is reflective of a changing world. Many European countries are aiming to eventually ban internal-combustion-car sales entirely, and if that were to happen, every automaker will need an EV of some sort. So even if the idea of a Ferrari without a V-8 or V-12, or hell, even a V-6, seems bizarre, it's an idea that must be considered.

Elkann also announced that Ferrari sold 9119 cars last year, down 10 percent year-over-year, but very strong considering the pandemic. Additionally, he said that the company will launch three new models in the coming months, and that the Purosangue SUV is on track for a 2022 debut.
