Yukon couple out hundreds of dollars after American Airlines cancels flight

YUKON, Okla. (KFOR) — An Oklahoma couple is out hundreds of dollars after their flight from Scotland was diverted, forcing them to scramble and find another plane.

Susan Engle and her husband were flying to Dallas on American Airlines back in March following a two-week vacation in Scotland.

“They made an announcement that we were going to have to do an emergency landing in Chicago to take care of this patient,” said Engle. “We were on the tarmac seated in the plane going nowhere for four-and-a-half hours at Chicago O’Hare.”

After sitting for hours, the captain announced their trip to Dallas was cancelled.

Engle said they were given a number to call to rebook their flight.

“We stood in line at the ticket agent for 45 minutes and nothing,” said Engle. “American Airlines said they had no flights that could get us from there to anywhere to get us home on that next day.”

Engle and her husband were eventually forced to spend an additional $900 to book a flight with a different carrier.

“It was an expensive trip and to have to endure additional costs after returning home made it even that much more expensive,” said Engle.

It’s now been over a month and Engle said she’s tried to contact American Airlines several times, hoping they will fix what she believes is a mistake on the company’s part.

“I understand that thing, that things happen that are out of our control. I work in health care. I understand we had a patient that had a medical issue,” said Engle. “American Airlines is responsible to make sure that they hold up their end.”

American Airlines sent News 4 the following statement,

“A member of our team is reaching out to the customer to learn more about their experience and address their concerns, as we never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans.”
