New York motorcycle registration renewal deadline approaching

NEW YORK STATE (WETM) — The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is reminding motorcyclists to renew their registrations by the end of the month.

According to the DMV, all motorcycle registrations last for one year and expire on April 30 each year. If a motorcycle’s registration was suspended or revoked, or if the motorcycle hasn’t been inspected within the past 12 months, it cannot be renewed. Additionally, if a motorcycle’s registration has been expired for more than one year, the owner will need to reregister it.

Motorcyclists with current registrations and up-to-date inspections can renew their registrations on the DMV’s website, and the process is only expected to take a few minutes. Those who need to reregister their motorcycles will have to do so in person at a DMV office or by mail.

New Yorkers encouraged to become organ donors

“Many motorcyclists begin to make travel plans as we get further into spring,” said DMV Commissioner Mark J. F. Schroeder. “In just a few minutes, you can conveniently and securely renew your motorcycle registration online and get ready for a season of enjoying travel along New York’s many scenic roadways.”

In addition to reminding motorcycle owners to renew their registrations before they expire, the DMV is reminding motorists to be extra cautious and aware of motorcycles as the weather gets nicer. Everyone on the road always needs to remain alert, stay sober, and follow all traffics laws and speed limits, but motorcyclists need to take extra safety precautions.

State looking to improve outdated technology at local DMVs

Motorcyclists should always wear DOT-approved helmets and eye protection and never wear novelty helmets, which are illegal on New York roads. They should also wear high quality riding gear with padding to remain protected in the event of a fall. The DMV recommends wearing high visibility and reflective garments as well in order to be more visible to other drivers.

According to the DMV, most crashes between cars and motorcycles occur when the motorcyclist is turning left. Motorcyclists should take an extra second to look and make sure there aren’t any oncoming vehicles before crossing traffic or turning left.

More information about motorcycle safety is available on the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee website, and more information about vehicle registration can be found on the DMV’s website.
