“The overall scores are calculated based on 27 indicators across our five categories.,” read on the Oxford Economics website. “Our best-in-class economic forecasts underpin these rankings, supplemented by additional publicly available datasets. By analyzing these five dimensions in depth, the Global Cities Index provides unparalleled insights into the multifaceted nature of urban environments worldwide.”

The top overall cities around the world are:

  • New York City

  • London

  • San Jose, Calif.

  • Tokyo

  • Paris

  • Seattle

  • Los Angeles

  • San Francisco

  • Melbourne

  • Zurich

Although New York was selected as the best city overall, the study showed that the Big Apple performed poorly in the quality of life, environment, and governance sections, not even making the top 10.
