EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Ysleta Independent School District (YISD) is honoring Dr. Xavier De La Torre for being the school district’s second longest-serving superintendent, the school district announced on Thursday, March 21.

De La Torre has been serving YISD for a decade, his first day being on March 24, 2014.

The school district says he has over 38 years in public education, beginning as a teacher and rising through the ranks. He has also won numerous awards throughout the years of his career and has transformed the 109-year-old district.

“I am extremely proud of the work we’ve done in the Ysleta Independent School District, and I consider the last 10 years the most rewarding and fulfilling years of my professional career,” Dr. De La Torre said.

De La Torre played an important part in getting YISD over $1 billion in funds to rebuild, renovate and modernize campuses district wide, according to the school district.

He also helped launch the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, El Paso’s first college-preparatory public school for girls grades 6 through 12.

“If you find a great environment, a great district where the community obviously supports its public school system, there should be no sense of urgency to run off to the next big job. So I’ve decided the Ysleta Independent School District is where I want to be,” Dr. De La Torre said.

The longest-term serving superintendent for YISD was Dr. J.M. Hanks who was the district’s first superintendent at the age of 28. He served from 1929 through 1980, when he retired after 51 years.
