WVU Tech “Campus Corridor” enters final stages of planning

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – You may have noticed an uptick in roadwork now that the days are longer and the weather is warmer.

One road that’s in the works is the WVU Tech “Campus Corridor.”

It’s not quite in the construction phase yet, but the project has entered the final stage of design and planning. The West Virginia Division of Highways had an open meeting on February 1st, 2024 to ask the public for feedback on the initial design. That feedback was due by March 6th, 2024. The feedback will now be integrated into an updated design.

Paul Mattox, the Project Manager for E.L. Robinson Engineering, who is also a WVU Tech grad and formerly the Secretary for the West Virginia Department of Transportation and Commissioner of the Division of Highways, said safety is their top priority for the concept.

“This project is all about safety for the students, faculty and staff that utilize that corridor through the campus and just make it a much safer environment for everybody. That’s going to class or going to work or whoever uses that corridor.”

Mr. Mattox, said two of the most pronounced concerns raised in the public feedback are related to emergency response times due to changes in traffic flow as well as a proposed round about near the Presbyterian Church on McCreery Street.

An updated project design should be delivered sometime in May. The first phase of construction will be utility companies making the required adjustments to their infrastructure. That phase is expected to start this summer and take about a year. Then construction on corridor updates will begin and should take about a year to complete, putting the rough delivery date somewhere in the summer of 2026.
