WVU Medicine provides care and comfort to 8-year-old with spina bifida

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – Eight-year-old Bobbee Ohara is just like every little girl; she loves reading, playing, art, and the famous cartoon “Bluey.”

Bobbee was diagnosed with spina bifida as an infant, however, and has been in and out of hospitals for a majority of her childhood.

Last Christmas, Bobbee underwent surgery to try and treat her birth defect.

Bobbee’s mother, Amanda, says WVU Medicine treated them like family in a time when they needed it the most.

“We were taken care of, like personal, like there were so many groups or outlets to somebody came in like two or three times a day,” said Amanda.

Bobbee participated in many different activities and crafts in the hospital while healing from her surgery.

She made a gingerbread house and was treated to a very special visit from the Santa Claus family and the big green man himself – the Grinch! The staff even let her in on a very special secret about the Grinch.

“They told me he was actually really nice in person,” said Bobbee.

Bobbee’s mother adds that without the love and support of the staff at WVU medicine, the journey would’ve been far more difficult.

“It’s just that personal experience that she gave her. We didn’t feel like a number, we felt like a patient. You are just not a kid with spina bifida. You are Bobbee,” said Bobbee’s mother.

Just a kid named Bobbee with a love for Bluey and a brand-new lease on life.
