World War II veteran honored with Sam Wireman Day in Chillicothe

CHILLICOTHE − Mayor Luke Feeney recently declared it Sam Wireman Day in Chillicothe.

Sam Wireman was born in Waldo, Kentucky, to Morgan and Polly Wireman and had three brothers and sisters.

According to the proclamation, Wireman enlisted in the Navy on Nov. 4, 1942, during World War II. He served until he was honorably discharged on Jan. 13, 1946. During his time in the service, he made seven trips across the Atlantic and Pacific. When World War II ended, he was serving in Okinawa, Japan and he was classified as Motor Machinist 1st Class.

"Upon his return home on March 9, 1946, he married Emogene May Wireman. They were married 72 years. Sam and Emogene moved to Ohio where Sam was employed at the Goodyear Atomic Plant from 1954-1962. After leaving Goodyear, he worked and retired from Dupont. Sam and Emognee have 2 children, 4 grandsons, and 9 great grandchildren. Mr. Wireman still lives independently and attends Richmond Dale Baptist Church nearly every Sunday where he has been a member for 65 years," the proclamation states.

Wireman enjoys reading which includes reading four to six books per week, and supports his favorite football teams, The Ohio State Buckeyes and Cincinnati Bengals. In years past, he enjoyed fishing.
