Worcester police: Englewood Avenue shooting victims were mother and daughter

WORCESTER — A mother and young daughter were shot to death on Englewood Avenue Tuesday afternoon.

Worcester police Wednesday confirmed the deaths involved family members, but no other details were released. The names of the victims were not shared. The daughter was a student in Worcester Public Schools.

No arrests have been reported.

Officers converged on the area of 19 Englewood Ave. about 3 p.m. Tuesday after a report of gunshots. The investigation soon focused on a small SUV parked on the street in front of the address. The vehicle, with a Connecticut license plate, had what appeared to be bullet holes.

Court documents indicate that surveillance video captured two people approaching the SUV and opening fire before running in the direction of a vehicle parked down the street.

When police reached the female victims, neither had a pulse, they said. The driver had been shot numerous times "throughout her body," they said.

Detectives spent hours studying the vehicle inside and out, placing several evidence markers on the pavement. A crime scene photographer took images.

The victims were rushed to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police said.

Authorities removed the car from the scene.

Englewood Avenue is west of Park Avenue in the Columbus Park neighborhood.

Meantime, a flower arrangement was in the spot Wednesday morning. Detectives also returned to the scene, entering a house at 21 Englewood Ave.

It was the second daylight shooting in Worcester in as many days. Monday, an 18-year-old male was injured by gunfire in the area of 2 Main St., near the old Worcester County Courthouse. The 4:30 p.m. shooting remains under investigation.

City leaders on Wednesday released a statement on the deaths, saying such violence has no place in Worcester.

The statement from City Manager Eric D. Batista, Mayor Joseph Petty, Interim Police Chief Paul Saucier and Schools Superintendent Rachel Monárrez reads, in part: "Worcester is a resilient community, and we know that our residents will lovingly embrace the victims’ family and friends as we work toward healing from this traumatic event.”
