Woman shot in back, multiple buildings damaged by gunfire after shooting at Rockford party

A 20-year-old woman was shot in the back and multiple buildings, including the former location of Children's Safe Harbor, were struck by gunfire early Sunday.

About 12:25 a.m. Sunday, Rockford Police officers heard multiple shots fired in the 1400 block of 20th Street. The officers were advised that a space had been rented for a party. During the party, gunfire was exchanged between unknown suspects.

A 20-year-old female was found shot in the back and was transported to a local hospital where she was listed as stable.

Police said multiple buildings were struck by gunfire including the former location of Children's Safe Harbor, an agency that provides supervised visitation and child custody exchange services.

The agency posted the following on its Facebook page:

"It has come to our attention there were shots fired Sunday evening outside of our old building. Last year, we relocated to 1340 S. Alpine Road. Children’s Safe Harbor stands against violence in our community. We are sad to hear of shots fired near our old location, but want to assure our followers that our staff and our clients are safe."
