Woman sentenced to 40-60 years for 2002 Charlotte murder

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — An Eaton County court has sentenced a woman to 40-60 years in prison for the 2002 murder and mutilation in Charlotte of her husband, 37-year-old Robert Caraballo.

A jury in April convicted 63-year-old Beverly McCallum of Second Degree Murder and Disinterment and Mutilation of a Dead Body.

McCallum’s sentencing took place on Thursday. Eaton County Prosecuting Attorney Douglas R. Lloyd made the announcement in a statement on Friday.

Officials had extradited McCallum from Italy two years after her arrest there in 2020. She had earlier run away to Pakistan, and in 2019 was initially charged with First Degree Murder for her involvement in the killing, Lloyd said.

Caraballo’s remains were recovered in Ottawa County in 2002, Lloyd said. It wasn’t until 2015 that officials were able to positively identify the remains as Caraballo.

Officials say that in 2002, McCallum and her co-defendants bludgeoned and beat Caraballo in the basement of their home on Horatio Street in Charlotte. According to testimony, they then took his body to an Ottawa County blueberry farm and set his body on fire.

Prosecutor Lloyd made the following statement:

“Yesterday marked the conclusion of a 22-year journey to justice for Robert Caraballo and his family. Robert was senselessly and brutally murdered, burned, and discarded by Beverly McCallum, Dineane Ducharme, and Christopher McMillan. His daughter, Sicily, was left left to believe that her father had abandoned her for more than a decade. While the successful prosecution of those responsible won’t bring back Robert, it is my hope that today Sicily, and the entire Caraballo family, feel a sense of justice and closure.”
