Woman arrested for attempted murder and arson in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (KSNW) — A 52-year-old woman is in jail, accused of setting a man’s house on fire and then stabbing him.

The Reno County Sheriff’s Office says it happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 5300 block of W. 43rd Ave. Deputies responded to the report of a stabbing, and when they arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from a home.

The sheriff’s office says a 65-year-old man was found just outside the home with multiple stab wounds to his chest. EMS took him to Hutchinson Regional Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The man was able to tell deputies that a woman had entered his house, set it on fire, stabbed him several times, and walked away. While deputies were investigating, Reno County 911 received a call from a 59-year-old man who said a woman had just tried to set his home in the 5300 block of W. Nickerson Blvd. on fire.

They were able to take the suspect into custody near the Nickerson Boulevard incident. She has been booked into the Reno County Correctional Facility on a $516,500 bond for attempted homicide in the first degree, attempted aggravated arson, arson, and criminal threat.

Firefighters extinguished the fire on West 43rd Avenue, but the home had extensive damage.

Formal charges against the woman are pending.
