White Sox release 2 players, cut roster to 43

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Chicago White Sox outright released two players Friday as the club continues to trim down their roster near the end of spring training.

According to a press release from the team, the White Sox released right fielder Kevin Pillar and third baseman Mike Moustakas, who have played a combined 24 seasons in Major League Baseball.

Both players were brought aboard ahead of spring training at positions of need for the White Sox — corner infield and corner outfield — but neither made all that spectacular of an impact with their bat as spring training carried on, leading to their release.

In 41 at-bats this spring, Moustakas slashed .195/.283/.317, while striking out more often (13) than he reached base (12).

Pillar faired slightly better, slashing .250/.306/.386 in 44 at-bats, with more than half of his hits going for doubles (6), but with Andrew Benintendi and Mark Payton performing better at the plate spring, in addition to more money being committed to the younger Dominic Fletcher, Pillar appeared to be the odd man out in the outfield.

With the moves, the White Sox have 43 players remaining in camp: 24 pitchers, three catchers, seven infielders and nine outfielders.
