Weymouth's payroll: Who made the most money in 2023

WEYMOUTH − Nine of the town's 10 highest-paid employees last year were police officers due to overtime work and paid details that pad base salaries.

Nineteen municipal employees were paid more than $200,000 in 2023, including 17 police officers, according to a list of salaries obtained by The Patriot Ledger.

The one non-police employee among the top 10 was Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Murphy.

Police Chief Richard Fuller said retirements, injuries and military obligations create many opportunities for overtime work.

“It’s all driven by overtime,” he said.

The police department has three officers out on long-term medical leave as well as three serving military obligations, which creates vacancies that are filled with overtime work.

Fuller said two of the officers are members of the Massachusetts National Guard assisting with the migrant crisis. In August, Gov. Maura Healey activated members of the National Guard to assist at shelters and hotels as the state struggles with an influx of migrants.

“People don’t think the migrant crisis affects small communities, but we’ve been paying overtime to fill their spots,” he said.

Since becoming chief in 2020, Fuller has hired 27 new officers and is hiring eight more.

"We were doing fine (with staffing), and we’ve had a slew of retirements," he said.

Police officers add to their base pay by working paid road details. Details can be either privately funded or paid by Weymouth or the state.

"We have a lot of projects going on, including Columbian Square," Fuller said.
