Weekend of quilts: AHS student growing youth show

Mar. 26—Allison Rose, Abilene 11th grader, with the help of the Arts Council of Dickinson County, organized a 4-H youth show for young quilters. The Youth Quilt Show was in the Abilene Community Center March 23 and March 24.

"I've been quilting since I was a little kid," Rose said. "So I've been trying to find a way to display my stuff instead of just the fair, and I think quilting is a really good outlet for kids to be creative instead of going outside or doing something inside like being on electronics or whatever."

Rose also thinks 4-Her's quilts should be shown off more in general than just at the Central Kansas Free Fair. The weekend show displayed 10 quilt displays from 4-Hers from various Dickinson County clubs. In total there were 18 quilts shown.

"So now we are trying to grow every year," Rose said. "This year, my mom reached out to the kids that displayed in 4-H, but several people have come in and asked how to display quilts for next year. So I'm trying to reach more into the community instead of just through 4-H."

The show also raffled off a quilt from the arts council.

Rose said she organized a similar show last year at the arts council's building. She wanted to bring the show to the community center to house more quilts and gain more traction.

The Community Foundation of Dickinson County gave Allison $1,000 to fund and grow the show.
