Strong winds, rain and storms are expected in Mississippi Monday with possibly severe storms in the afternoon and into Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service for Jackson.

All shelters and safe rooms are operated on the local level, according to MEMA. The following safe rooms are open:

Adams County – 323 Liberty Road, Natchez, MS (Opens at 3 p.m.)

Lamar County – 99 Central Industrial Row, Purvis, MS (Opens at 5 p.m.)

Sharkey County – South Delta Middle School Gym – 86 Middle School Rd, Anguilla, MS 38721 (Opens at 5 p.m.) South Delta High School Gym – 106 Athletic Drive, Rolling Fork, MS 39159 (Opens at 5 p.m.)

8:24 a.m.: Severe weather expected and how to stay safe

Primary hazards will be damaging wind gusts and tornadoes. Hail and flash flooding will also be possible.

There is the possibility of strong or long-track tornadoes.

Parts of Mississippi have been upgraded to a level 3, enhanced risk for severe storms, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency says.

Tornado shelter safety tips

The best option for shelter during a tornado is a FEMA recommended storm shelter. The next best option is the interior room or basement of a well-constructed home or building.

Bad options are large open rooms or manufactured homes. The worst options are mobile homes, vehicles or under a highway overpass.
