Weather Permitting: Turbulent weather will give way to pleasant weekend in Fayetteville

A turbulent stretch of weather over the Cape Fear region will give way to a pleasant weekend, with highs in the 70s.

Enjoy the break while we can. Looks like more rain on the way next week. A series of impulses will drift across the Carolinas next work week, each bringing increased chances of rain.

The Cape Fear region remains at a Level 2 risk for severe weather.

Here's the setup

The last lines of strong storms will push through the Cape Fear region Thursday afternoon. The Storm Prediction Center has kept the region under a Level 2 risk for storms, mainly for gusty winds and hail.

The most severe weather, however, looks to remain to our south, in South Carolina, this morning. By late afternoon, the risk in Fayetteville should wane, leaving the region with clearing conditions.

We won't be finished with rain, however. As a cold front begins to sink through North Carolina, residual moisture will trigger showers, some with thunder. Clouds and showers will hold highs in the Fayetteville area to 82 or so.

Afternoon rain chances will be higher in the southern region. Rain ends in the evening as the system slides offshore, setting the stage for a pleasant weekend.

Temperatures will remain pleasant through the weekend.

The weekend

Saturday and Sunday should be everything the work week wasn't. A northwest flow with roots in Canada will bring cooler, dry air to the region Saturday morning. Fayetteville will wake up to the upper 50s, with sunshine and highs of about 75. Overnight lows will slip to the mid-50s.

Sunday will be a bit warmer, in the upper 70s across the region. With dew points in the upper 40s, it's hard to imagine a more pleasant weekend.

Down the road

After a pleasant Monday, showers return Tuesday into mid-week. As high-pressure slides offshore, another string of impulses is expected to drift into the Carolinas. Dew points climb again, setting the stage for more unsettled weather.

Enjoy the weekend!
