Water companies release image of proposed reservoir

Two water companies have released an artist's impression of what a proposed new reservoir could look like.

Anglian Water and Cambridge Water have produced the image to show what the site close to Chatteris, Doddington and March in Cambridgeshire could become.

The companies said the reservoir project was vital for growth and prosperity “in a future with more people but less reliable rainfall".

Further public consultation on the proposals will take place from 30 May to 25 July.

'Crucial role'

The reservoir would supply enough water for about 250,000 homes and reduce the amount taken from rivers and underground aquifers.

It is part of a multibillion-pound investment programme that forms part of a plan to make the region resilient to drought while improving environmental protection.

Geoff Darch, head of supply demand at Anglian Water, said: “In a future with more people but less reliable rainfall, the reservoir will have a crucial role to provide future water supply.

"However, our aspiration goes beyond a reservoir for public water supply.

"Our intention is to design a reservoir that the local community can be proud of, and that will encourage people to visit and enjoy its surroundings."

He said that Rutland Water and Grafham Water already showed the positive impact sites could have on the surrounding community and economy.

The reservoir would allow excess river water in winter to be collected and stored for use in dry summers.

The companies said it would reduce reliance on sensitive ground water sources such as chalk streams, helping to protect and restore the environment.

Over an eight-week consultation period, the companies will ask for feedback on the proposed designs.

Natalie Akroyd, director of quality and environment at Cambridge Water, said: "These events are a great opportunity for the public to engage with the project team and we look forward to welcoming further feedback on our emerging design.”
