Watch live: Enormous SpaceX Starship rocket attempts 3rd launch after first 2 exploded

SpaceX Starship's third launch is scheduled for Thursday morning and is being streamed live here.

This third test flight of Starship, like the first two, are from Boca Chica, Texas. Past tests failed and ended in explosions.

For Florida, Starship is a big deal, SpaceX is looking to develop a new Starship-Super Heavy launch complex at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

What is Starship?

Starship is the most powerful rocket from SpaceX and is aiming to make its third Flight Test (IFT-3) from Starbase. This launch will feature a fully stacked launch system.

Why is SpaceX launching Starship?

While SpaceX has promised excitement in the much anticipated third test flight for its massive rocket, officials have said this is only a test.

SpaceX tweeted Thursday, March 14, minutes ahead of scheduled launch time, "If Starship manages to make it all the way to reentry, we'll collect valuable data on reentry at hypersonic speeds, or more than 5 times the speed of sound."

What time is Starship launch on March 14, 2024, aka Pi Day?

SpaceX, which is hosting live coverage on its social media channels, said Starship third flight test is targeting 8:25 a.m. CT Thursday, March 14, 2024, for liftoff. It's nearly a year since the first Starship flight test (see below). Fun fact: 3/14 is known as "Pi Day" or the mathematical constant 3.14.

When did Starship first launch (and explode)?

The first test flight happened in April 2023, but the vehicle only rose to 39 km (24 mi)over the Gulf of Mexico before leaking propellant caused a fire in the Super Heavy booster. This resulted in SpaceX losing communication and control of Starship.  According to SpaceX, the Autonomous Flight Safety System (AFSS) — a self-destruct safety system —took over, detonating the vehicle just under 4 minutes into the flight.

Starship second launch attempt: What happened?

The second test flight was in November 2023, and according to SpaceX's site, Starship reached space for the first time. However, trouble with liquid oxygen supply to an engine occurred during the flight. The issue caused the failure of one engine, leading to another fiery ending.

SpaceX Starship third test flight lifts off!

Starship liftoff was at 9:25 a.m. CT Thursday, March 14, 2024. According to SpaceX tweets:

  • Starship cleared the launch pad and vehicle was on a nominal flight path at 9:26 a.m.

  • Starship's Raptor engines ignited during hot-staging separation. Super Heavy executed the flip maneuver.

  • Super Heavy boostback burn was completed.

  • Starship's Raptor engine burn was completed and Starship entered a "coast" phase in space.

On day of SpaceX Starship third test flight in Texas, there's a SpaceX Starlink launch in Florida

Less than 12 hours after Starship's third test flight in Boca Chica, Texas, SpaceX Starlink 6-44 is set to lift off from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The SpaceX Starlink 6-44 launch scrubbed Wednesday, March 13. SpaceX's next launch window will open at 7:04 p.m. EST Thursday, March 14. The Space Force's 45th Weather Squadron pegged the odds of "go for launch" conditions at 95% for this backup window. "On Thursday, the boundary will have cleared to our north, taking most of the mid-level moisture with it. Excellent weather is on tap for a launch attempt Thursday evening with the Cumulus Cloud Rule being only a distant concern," the squadron's forecast said.
