Walmart to remove self-checkout lanes at one St. Louis County location

SHREWSBURY, Mo. – Walmart plans to remove self-checkout lanes as soon as this weekend at its Shrewsbury Supercenter in St. Louis County.

A company spokesperson tells FOX 2 that Walmart will begin removing self-checkout lanes on Sunday, a decision that will lead customers to complete their purchases at an associate-staffed checkout.

The spokesperson says this change comes after a period of customer and employee evaluation, in addition to market research. The company is hopeful this change will improve customer satisfaction and the store’s overall shopping experience.

“We believe the change will improve the in-store shopping experience and give our associates the chance to provide more personalized and efficient service.”

The impacted store is located at 7437 Watson Road. It will take Walmart around two weeks to remove the self-checkouts and transform the part of the store.

FOX 2 requested further detail on what this could mean for other Walmart stores in the Greater St. Louis area, but a spokesperson said there was no further comment.

Another retailer, Schnucks, changed its self-checkout policies earlier this year to 10 or fewer items across St. Louis-area stores.
