Memorial Day weekend is here, which means the summer season has unofficially started.

Formerly known as "Decoration Day," the holiday seeks to commemorate those who died while serving in the U.S. military.

Wondering if you can still shop for groceries before hosting or attending any outdoor events this weekend? We got you covered. Here's what stores and services are open in Florida on the holiday.

When is Memorial Day 2024?

Memorial Day is always celebrated on the last Monday of May, with this year's being on Monday, May 27. Memorial Day weekend starts on Friday, May 24, and lasts through the holiday until Monday.

Is Memorial Day a federal holiday?

Yes, it is one of 11 federal holidays in the U.S. Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971.

The 10 other federal holidays observed annually are:

  • New Year’s Day on January 1

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the third Monday in January

  • Washington’s Birthday, or Presidents Day, on the third Monday in February

  • Juneteenth on June 19

  • Independence Day, or the Fourth of July, on July 4

  • Labor Day on the first Monday in September

  • Columbus Day, or Indigenous Peoples Day, on the second Monday in October

  • Veterans Day on Nov. 11

  • Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November

  • Christmas on Dec. 25

Are all Florida, national government offices open on Memorial Day?

Federal offices will be closed on Memorial Day, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Since Monday is also a state holiday, Florida government employees are also off that day.

Is the Post Office, UPS and FedEx open on Memorial Day?

All USPS offices will be closed on Monday for retail transactions and no mail will be delivered, the company confirmed to USA TODAY.

UPS and FedEx will also be closed for deliveries on Memorial Day, though some UPS stores may be open. FedEx Custom Critical will still be operating, according to the company's website.

Are banks open on Memorial Day?

Most banks and credit unions will be closed. JP Morgan Chase, PNC, Truist and Capital One confirmed to USA TODAY their branches will be closed on Memorial Day.

Are Florida public libraries open on Memorial Day?

According to the Florida Department of State, all libraries will be closed on Memorial Day.

Can I go to Publix or Winn-Dixie? Are grocery stores open on Memorial Day?

Most grocery stores are open on Memorial Day, including:

  • Aldi

  • Fresh Market

  • Publix

  • Sprouts

  • Target

  • Trader Joe's

  • Walmart

  • Whole Foods Market

Is Costco, Sam's Club or BJ's Wholesale Club open on Memorial Day?

Costco will open its newest location in Florida off the International Golf Parkway, north of St. Augustine, at 8 a.m Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2022. The 152,000-square-foot warehouse will be the company's first location in St. Johns County, joining locations in Orange Park and Jacksonville.

Both Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale Club will be open on Memorial Day.

However, Costco will be closed. It is one of seven days the warehouse stores are closed, according to it's website.

Are pharmacies open on Memorial Day?

Both Walgreens and CVS stores will be open on Memorial Day, but some of their pharmacies will be closed. It’s best to check your local pharmacy for hours.
