VSP conducting ‘Operation DISS-rupt’ throughout I-64

RONAOKE, Va. (WFXR) — With schools across Virginia off for Spring Break, multiple Virginia State Police Divisions will be conducting Operation Diss-rupt on all 299 miles of I-64 on April 3 and April 4.

The traffic enforcement and education safety initiative focuses on the four key causes of fatal and serious injury crashes across the Commonwealth’s interstates. These causes, or ‘DISS‘, in driving include:

  • Distracted Driving

  • Impaired Driving

  • Speed Compliance

  • Seat Belt Safety

According to VSP, preliminary data shows 165 people have been killed in a traffic crash on a Virginia roadway so far this year. Also, 27 pedestrians have reportedly been struck and killed in Virginia since the start of the year.

“We are currently on roughly the same pace as last year with traffic deaths,” said Captain Craig C. Worsham, Virginia State Police Appomattox Division Commander. “This is the second time in the last six months we’ve focused on I-64, and when we did in October, there were no fatalities. We are challenging motorists to help DISS-rupt the dangerous driving behaviors that put them at risk.”

The operation’s goal is to achieve zero fatal crashes during the designated enforcement periods and to reduce the total number of crashes on the interstates for the calendar year by 10 percent. Officers will patrol the interstate, focusing on the ‘DISS” driving behaviors.

VSP reports during a similar operation on I-64 in Virginia, deputies cited 200 drivers for reckless driving, 362 drivers for speeding, 75 drivers for the ‘Hands-Free’ law, and five arrests for driving under the influence.
