MADISON, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Big changes are coming to Wisconsin elections this year. Tuesday (4/2/24) voters approved two new election law changes that were championed by Republicans. Private donations for elections are now banned in the state.

Conservative activists argued a donation from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg helped Democratic turnout in 2020 and unfairly shaped the election outcome. Biden won Wisconsin by fewer than 21,000 votes that year. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, Wisconsin now joins more than two dozen states that have banned or otherwise regulated private donations for elections.

Voters also approved a second amendment that would allow only officials designated by state law to administer elections.

Those in favor of the amendment said it will guard against outside consultants participating in the election process. The changes are a win for Republican Lawmakers, who have pushed to alter voting rules in the battleground state ahead of this year’s Presidential Election.
